Kurioser and Kurioser: DAREarts Supporters Raise $20,000 at Cirque du Soleil

Earlier this fall, DAREarts and Cirque du Soleil teamed up to raise over $20,000 for at-risk kids. Thank you to Cirque for their generous donation of 122 VIP seats to its new show, Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities, and to DAREarts patrons for filling every single seat! A heartfelt thank you to both our new and continuing supporters, including Northbridge Insurance, KPMG, Noront and Aimia.

The night began with a reception under the VIP circus tent that gave DAREarts’ VIP supporters the chance to meet and mingle. As a thank you for attending the event, Cirque du Soleil also offered every guest a gift bag that included concept art of the show’s fantastical costumes and a leather-bound journal.

This summer, Cirque also generously offered sixty DAREarts youth and family members the chance of a lifetime: tickets to the final dress rehearsal of Kurios. The response to this has been fantastic. In the words of one parent, “This topped off my daughter’s summer with a smile.  This has given us a great memory when we don’t have much!” One of the core goals of DAREarts has always been to inspire children to reinvent themselves through the arts; Cirque du Soleil’s productions embody that idea.

That has never been more clear than in Kurios, which itself has redefined what a Cirque show can be. As Director Michel Laprise said in an interview with AXS: “At the beginning of the creation process, I put things on the table that were technically impossible.” This fits in with the time period of the show “which is the second half of the 19th century…an era of discoveries, inventions and creativity.”

The result is a production which the Toronto Star declared Cirque’s “strongest act in years.” That commitment to reinvention is an inspiration for every DAREarts youth. We hope that we can continue our partnership with Cirque du Soleil in the future and with you, our valued supporters.

We make a great team.
